Tip of the Month -- JUNE 2005 -- Training: Short and to the Point!

from Darryl Nelson (email Darryl)

Keep your strength training sessions short. They should not exceed one hour in length. Extended strength training sessions can lead to negative physiological changes such as a decrease in growth hormone and testosterone, and an increase in cortisol. Growth hormone and testosterone are essentiol for repairing bones and muscles. Cortisol causes the breakdown of muscle tissue. However, short and intense strength training sessions can cause increases in growth hormone and testosterone. Remember, training should be short and to the point.
