Tip of the Month -- APRIL 2005 -- Strength Training for Hockey

from Darryl Nelson (email Darryl)

Make sure the strength training you perform measures up to your sport and your objectives. Ask yourself "what does hockey really demand"? It is fast paced and it requires coordination, balance, and agility. Therefore, your training should also demand these things. Train with free weights and your bodyweight because they require balance and body awareness while machines do not. In hockey you often use one extremity at a time so your strength training should also involve single extremity exercises. For instance, 1 leg squats or lunges, and dumbbell exercises for the upper body.
