Tip of the Month -- AUGUST 2004 -- Training

from Darryl Nelson (email Darryl)

Warm it up!

Warm up before taking the ice. Your heart rate and body temperature should be elevated, and your nervous system and muscles should be ready to go. In other words: You should be sweating before you go on the ice. Then you will be ready to go when the puck drops. In order to be prepared for hockey you must warm up by doing things that imitate hockey. Therefore, static stretching won’t cut it. Some simple drills to warm up with are jumping and bounding, skipping rope, wrestling, and running 30 yard sprints. So throw some tennis shoes and sweats in you hockey bag and get to the rink 15 minutes early.
