Tip of the Month -- FEBRUARY 2004-- Learn To Play

from Amy Grossman (email Amy)

Going Skating for the First Time

  • When you are taking a child skating for the first time don’t force them to go on the ice if they are reluctant. Some children like to sit near the ice or even to touch it in order to reduce their anxiety.
  • Once you are on the ice, encourage children to ‘walk like a penguin’, shifting their weight from one foot to the other.
  • Do not carry children. It’s dangerous for everyone!
  • Allow your child to push you IF you are comfortable skating backwards. The added resistance forces the skater to bend their knees more, helping them balance.
  • Practice getting up after a fall. Sitting on two knees, put one knee out so that you can use one or both arms to push from the top of this leg.
